Dead humpback washed ashore whale in New York

A dead humpback whale was washed ashore on Rockaway Beach in Queens, New York, earlier last week. The carcass had initially been sighted nine miles off the shore by the U.S. coast guard before it stranded on Tuesday morning.

Besides its estimated length of 25 to 30 feet, no further information about the whale or its cause of death are known. In keeping with social distancing guidelines issued in New York, the scientists of the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society were not able to examine the whale. They are now working with the New York City Department of Sanitation and Office of Emergency Management to determine the best method to retrieve the its body.

People are asked to keep their distance from the dead animal - as one should do in all stranding events – and not congregate on the beach but practice social distancing.
