PROJECT AIMS

Elasmobranch, Cetacean and Turtle stranding data will be organised into a database which is spatially referenced for public access, so citizens interested in the project are able to see when and where stranding of certain species occur.
The database that the network will proceed to work off, will provide a valuable source of information relating to various stranded species and the results of their deaths. SANCET is aimed at providing the first regional network for centralising information on marine life strandings in Montenegro, with the hope to expand future operations in both Albania and Bosnia. With the current situation of cetacean stranding monitoring is being absent from the Eastern region of the South Adriatic and with a lack of national stranding networks, SANCET hopes to provide a database that encompasses all or part of the aforementioned coastlines.
SANCET will continue to keep the database growing by collaborating with other institutions in the Adriatic region, including Croatia and Southern Italy, in the hope that a more well rounded knowledge on stranding causation in particular can be published. The contribution of this work will then be implemented toward reducing the number of strandings that occur in the future. Ultimately, SANCET will aim to include and collaborate with governmental bodies, national, regional and local departments for the environment, public and private institutions, NGO's, accomplished research professionals and the public.
With limited to no information presented on the location or causation of Southern Adriatic strandings, two levels of data collection will be presented. Data will contain both basic information (location, species, number of individuals, stranded, dead or alive) and the collection of advanced information conducted by specialist and well-trained staff.
The contributions of the work conducted by SANCET will be presented annually in reports with the coordination and collaboration of all parties involved. SANCET will also continue to present information of specific stranding of particular species by producing peer-reviewed scientific journals or technical reports. The contribution of this work can then be forwarded to the correct ministries and institutions in order to prevent such events from occuring again in the near future. All contributing and collaborating parties will agree to the SANCET Code of Conduct beforehand.
