After an adult and two juveniles were reported to have been washed ashore at Whangaparapara on Great Barrier Island, New Zealand, the Department of Conservation (DOC) rushed to the site to save them.
Unfortunately, by the time they arrived, one of the whales had already been dead. The other two could be successfully refloated and the staff stayed with them as long as they could. However, all their effort “wasn’t enough to save them”. The two whales were found dead onshore over the next two days. No obvious signs for their stranding could be detected, however, routine samples and measurement were taken for further investigation.
The DOC worked with the Ngāti Rehua Ngātiwai ki Aotea “to ensure the dead whales were given an appropriate farewell and burial”.
