At aprox. 10am on the 23rd October a tourist noticed a beached Humpback on Samoa beach. Thankfully the visitor knew to call wildlife officials, who along with volunteers and scientists from the North Coast Marine Mammal Centre and Humboldt State University Marine Mammal Stranding Network arrived at the scene to take care of the whale.
The whale was entangled in ropes and nets, which were removed by the team while they poured water over it as it lay stuck in the sand. Director of the HSU MMSN, Dr Dawn Goley, concluded that it was impossible to push the whale back into the ocean. Their only option was to keep it comfortable and wait for the tide to come in.
By 6:30pm the tide began to come in and by 7pm the whale was nearly fully submerged. The whale seemed to be making its way back to the ocean. We are waiting on the news from wildlife officials with the whale’s condition.
