Bottlenose dolphin rescued in Cornwell

Late in the morning in Hayle, UK, a live stranded bottlenose dolphin was encountered by a dog walker who proceeded to call the British Divers Marine Life Rescue immediately. The mobilized team of volunteer Marine Mammal Medics assessed the young male to only have superficial injuries. First aid was provided by keeping the animal wet and sheltering it from the wind with a surfboard and windbreaker.

Since the animal’s condition was deemed moderate, efforts were made to refloat it as soon as possible. However, because the tide had gone out and the sea in Gwithian bay was very rough, the decision was made to release the dolphin in a bay half a mile further up where the sea state was calmer.

The Harley Surf Lifesaving Club volunteered their four-wheel vehicle to transport the dolphin. After bringing the animal back out to sea, the volunteers kept following it as it travelled parallel to the beach before it finally headed off to sea more strongly.
