The mother and her calf were found in a bayou near Grand Chenier, Louisiana. Their displacement was most likely a result of the flooding after Hurricane Laura.
Thankfully, the Audubon Coastal Wildlife Network (CWN) was able to rescue both. In collaboration with the Southeast Region Marine Mammal Stranding Network, the mother and her calf were placed on special carriers to transport and release them back into the sea.
Before that, the mother was satellite tagged to monitor her movements after the rescue. The data will allow valuable insight into the success of the rescue, where the dolphins live, and thereby offer “better understanding of overall dolphin movement in Louisiana.”
It is not uncommon to find animals displaced months after the initial storm and flooding. During the last couple of weeks, Audubon and the Marine Mammal Stranding Network have successfully rescued six bottlenose dolphins that were presumably trapped out of habitat by Hurricane Laura, as we have covered here.
