Dolphin pond in search of washed up conspecific

Several locals reported a dead dolphin washed up on the slipway in Dartmouth, Devon (UK), on Saturday. The animal was taken away by the local Dartmouth Harbour Authority on the same day. A witness claims to have seen puncture wounds in the animal’s head which are most likely to have been bullet wounds. No further information about the issue is public yet.

While locals expressed their shock at the grisly end of the dolphin, something “deeply moving” happened the next day. A pond of at least 20 dolphins could be seen scouting the area the dead dolphin had been washed up in the day before. Up until now not more than one mammal at a time had been witnessed in the harbour of Kingswear. A spokesperson of the charity Orca backs the locals’ hypothesis that the group came in to look for their lost member. “Dolphins are very social animals and have complicated social structures within their ponds”. Therefore, their appearance in the river is likely connected to the initial incident.
