A common dolphin stuck on a sandbank off Fishguard Harbour in Wales had alarmed the town’s mayor to call Sea Trust. Volunteers from the Wales Marine Rescue, Celtic Quest Coasteering, the UK Cetacean Stranding Investigation Programme and a BDMLR marine medic quickly jumped into action to rescue the animal in distress.
They found the common dolphin in a good physical condition but stuck in 40 cm deep water on a sand bar. Several other dolphins were seen close by, seemingly waiting for their companion. Using a sling, the rescue team was able to refloat the animal to waist-high water. From there, it managed to head back to sea by itself. The team was very happy to have braced the freezing conditions and harsh wind for such a happy ending.
