Failed rescue effort ends in euthanization

Another pilot whale has washed ashore in southern Australia, this time on King Island. The incident comes one week after several hundred pilot whales had died not far away on Tasmanian shores in a historic stranding event.

The Parks and Wildlife Service staff and volunteers had tried to save the long-finned pilot whale by moving it to a more appropriate release location in a trailer. After arrival, the animal was “held in shallow water until deemed suitable for release.” However, the situation turned bleak as the whale’s condition deteriorated throughout the day. Eventually, its health was deemed too low to be able to survive the release. The animal was euthanized to spare it any more pain and suffering.

The Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service had to experience how another stranded pilot whale lost its life
