Within the last two weeks, five dolphins were found by walkers in different places along the coast of the Isle of Wight. They have all been discovered in pairs or individually on the southwestern side of the British Island.
Generally, such a high number within a short amount of time is rather unusual. However, under current conditions it is not completely unexpected. According to the experience of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, they “regularly have the highest numbers of animals washing up on [the] coast during wintertime”. This is most likely because of “certain weather systems influencing currents and prevailing winds”. In a previous post, we have also covered the notion that an increasing number of super trawlers between France and England might be influential.
To understand why these five dolphins stranded, thorough assessment through post-mortem investigation will be necessary. To draw an objective and scientifically based conclusion, we will have to wait for the annual CSIP statistic to put this incident into relation.
