Harp seal rescued in Ocean City is recovering

Last Sunday, an undernourished harp seal had to be rescued in Ocean City, Maryland. After initial assessment showed extreme dehydration, the female juvenile was transported to the Aquarium Animal Care and Rescue Centre in Baltimore.

Since the week’s naming theme was storybook characters, the harp seal was named after the childhood character Amelia Bedelia. She is currently receiving fluids and tube-fed fish gruel to help her regain energy and appetite during rehabilitation.

Her roommate is a female seal pub named Pippi Longstocking that arrived three weeks ago, suffering from dehydration, malnourishment and an infected front flipper.

The National Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program aims to help stranded marine mammals and turtles by providing rescue missions, long-term rehabilitation and year-round release.
