The young mink whale was found dead on the beach of Bredene, Belgium, last Friday. Though the scientists cannot say for sure, the animal’s thin state suggests that its broken jaw might have led to difficulty in feeding. An autopsy should reveal more about the actual cause of death.
Mink whales belong to the same family as humpback and blue whales. Though they are mostly found in the North Sea, they seem to be moving increasingly to the south. So far, the reason why remains a mystery to the scientists.
Further investigations in combination with the already existing stranding data will be necessary to understand the phenomenon.
