More concern for bottlenose whales in Ireland

After a pod of seven Northern bottlenose whales had stranded and died on a beach in Donegal only two weeks ago (covered here), further concerns for the species are arising.

First, several Northern bottlenose whales were seen off the Isle of Arran in the Clyde last week. Finding the deep-diving species so unusually close to shallow water is especially concerning as they are prone to mass strandings. Only days later, a dead individual was found some distance out in the Bay of Roosebeck. Since it might have been part of that pod, experts warn that further strandings might occur if the pod is still around. In that case, officials should be called in immediately. It has also empathized that the animal should not be approached by the public – “as interesting (and sad) as it is to get a rare chance to see one of our ocean giants” – as the water, as well as the animal itself, can pose major threats to the helper.

Another Northern bottlenose whale has been found stranded on the Irish coast.
