More pilot whales dead in New Zealand

After several stranding incidents in the south of New Zealand during the last couple of weeks, another one has now hit the northern part.

A rescue mission on Saturday was able to refloat the 25 pilot whales that stranded themselves in Colville Bay. However, by Sunday morning it became apparent that 19 had rebeached themselves overnight and died on the rocky headland. They were blessed by the local iwi.

The general rescue manager of Project Noah announced that they must have split from the main pod. The main focus of the rescuers was now to ensure that the rest of the pod stayed in deeper water.

The pod of 25 pilot whale had successfully been refloated on Saturday, but many restranded over night and died on the beach.
