More than 160 Melon-Headed Whales found stranded in Capo Verde

Over 130 whales have died on the coast of Boa Vista Island (Capo Verde) in a mass stranding event that is currently unexplained.

Reports came in from locals and tourists on 25th September 2019 of over 160 whales stranded on the sand. In an attempt to rescue the mammals, later identified as Melon Headed Whales, volunteers dragged individuals back into the ocean. Unfortunately, the majority were disorientated and continued to swim back towards the shore where they were unable to survive.

Scientists from BIOS - a nonprofit conservation organisation based in Capo Verde - took samples from 50 of the deceased whales with the intention of determining a potential cause of the event.
