New Zealand has become the sad location of another mass stranding last weekend, when nearly 100 stranded whales were reported to New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) last Sunday at noon.
By the time officials arrived on the Waitangi West Beach on Chatham Island, three quarter of the animals had already died. The leftover 26 whales were alive but too weak to be refloated in the rough sea condition. Plus, white sharks were already waiting in the water, attracted by the dead and weak bodies. Finally, the decision was made to euthanize the leftover whales to relieve them from their suffering on the beach.
Afterwards, a ceremony was held on the beach to honour the whales’ spirits before they were left on the beach to decompose naturally.
