Shortly after a harbour porpoise was reported stranded in Eastbourne, another dead individual was found on Brighton’s seafront. The adult animal was discovered by a resident who mistook it for a baby dolphin at first. “It was quite small so definitely a baby, but too big to be a fish," she said. "It looked like a dolphin but it wasn't fully-grown."
Harbour porpoises are the smallest cetaceans resident in English waters. They can be differentiated from dolphins by their short but robust body (1.4 – 1.9 metres), a poorly demarcated beak and their characteristic triangular dorsal fin.
The Brighton Dolphin Project took care of the incident. Reasons of death or stranding could not be confirmed yet.
