The two stranded olive ridley turtles were rescued by Forest Department officials and volunteers of the Clean Kundapur Project. Heavily injured, they were brought to the ReefWatch Marine Conservation Centre in Kundapur, Karnataka in India, to be treated for their wounds and receive fluids.
According to Dr Shantanu Kalambi, the veterinarian in action, they had only been two out of eight sea turtles that had stranded in the area during the last ten days. Another one did not survive.
Overall, 14 sea turtles had been found dead in the last month around Kundapur, many of which had died entangled in fishing nets. Such ghost nets are disposed in the sea and cause growing problems to the marine population and coastal areas. Dr Shantanu hopes that the fisheries department finally recognizes the “growing issue and establish proper disposal systems for fishing nets”. Last year, the carcass of 36 sea turtles and eleven dolphins had been found across the state’s coast.
