UPDATE: Samoa beached Humpback

We have had an update on the beached humpback whale in Samoa: The humpback whale had been stranded for over 30 hours. Dr. Dawn Goley concluded that the best solution was to humanely euthanise the whale at approx. 5:45 pm to stop any suffering due to organ failure. This whale weighed over 30 tones, therefore its organs are designed for the ocean where they are almost weightless. On land the weight is too much for the organs. After 24 hours the whale begins to suffer from organ damage, which means they lose the ability to swim.

Goley explained the expert’s next steps: “We’ll do a full examination of its body to see if we can learn anything from this stranding that can help us in future strandings."

She is very sorry for the outcome. Experts did everything they could, but their options were limited. If they had dug holes or attempted to lift the whale it would have put the whale at risk. The swell was too high to dig a pathway out towards the ocean.
